I Met With My Younger Self

I met up with my younger self today, just over a decade had passed between us.

We arrived at the same time, both a few minutes late.

She was barefoot and arrived on her bike, I wore my favourite white dress and a bracelet my daughter made me.

She ordered a strong coffee, I chose a loose-leaf chai (I do my best to go slower these days).

She spoke with a clear English accent, I replied with a soft Australian lilt.

She said I can’t believe I get to live here. I said I’ll never take it for granted, especially now, raising daughters.

I asked if she had taken the leap yet, she said almost – I smiled and said me too (another one).

I told her it was time to go all in, quit her other job. She said maybe, soon.

Her hands were dirty from making, and she had just met with a client at a cafe. I told her that we have a store and a team of nearly 30 now, and that my hands hadn’t been dirty in a while.

She spoke passionately about the new collection she had just photographed on her film camera.

I told her I was just back from a campaign shoot in Byron Bay, surrounded by creatives we admire. She told me she’s working really, really hard, I smiled and told her not much has changed.

She asked if it gets easier. I told her it gets much harder, but I have never lost sight of the reason why I started.

She told me she’d made her first engagement ring, and it felt magical!

I told her that’s most of what we do now - and that feeling of magic, it never goes away.
