NMJ Lovers | Emily and Guy

This chapter of NMJ Lovers feels especially close to home.

Emily is usually behind the scenes sharing the love stories of our NMJ couples. This time, the story belongs to her and her fiancé, Guy.

Nearly a decade in the making, theirs is a love shaped by growing up alongside one another. From shy glances across the counter of a local café to a life filled with travel, adventure and memories made around the world, Emily and Guy have moved through many seasons together — choosing one another through each one.

“We’ve grown up alongside one another, choosing each other through every season and creating a life filled with more adventure and memories than I ever could have dreamed of.”

Take us back to the beginning. How did you and Guy meet, and what first drew you to one another?

Guy and I met nearly ten years ago. I was working at our local café at the time, and Guy would come in almost every day. We’d noticed one another, but neither of us ever quite had the courage to start a conversation.

Eventually, we both ended up at the same party and, with a little Dutch courage, finally started chatting. There was just something about Guy that completely drew me in. I remember being in awe of him, and I fell head over heels pretty quickly.

Looking back now, it makes me smile thinking about those quiet café encounters and how neither of us could have known what they would eventually become.

You’ve shared so many chapters together since then. What are some of the little things that have come to define your relationship?

Being together for almost ten years means we’ve really grown up alongside one another. We’ve navigated so many different seasons of life together, and I think one of the things that defines our relationship is continuing to make the choice to choose one another through all of them.

Communication has always been incredibly important to us and something we continue to prioritise. But I also think adventure has become such a big part of who we are together.

With Guy being a photographer, we’ve been fortunate enough to travel to places I could once only have dreamed of. The adventures we’ve shared and the memories we’ve made around the world are something I’ll forever be grateful for. Guy has opened my world in so many ways, and experiencing all of it alongside him has made it even more special.

Uluwatu - and particularly Uluwatu Surf Villas - holds such a special place in our hearts.

We’ve made some of our most treasured memories there, met some of our now closest friends and crossed paths with so many incredible people. There’s something about being there that allows us to slow down, come back to ourselves and connect even more deeply with one another.

It already held so much meaning for us, so for Guy to choose that exact place to propose made the moment feel almost surreal. I had dreamed about being asked there, which made discovering that he had chosen it himself even more special.

"I had always dreamed of a three-stone design - a ring to represent our past, our present and everything still to come."

Working at Natalie Marie Jewellery, you’re surrounded by beautiful rings and love stories every day. Had you imagined what your own engagement ring might look like — and what was it like seeing the ring Guy had created for you for the first time?

Love, to me, is one of the greatest gifts we get to experience, and I had dreamed about the day Guy would propose for years.

Having worked in jewellery for seven years, I’ve been lucky enough to see so many beautiful engagement rings and, naturally, I’d spent a lot of time imagining what mine might one day look like. My ideas evolved over the years as I discovered different stones, shapes and designs, but nothing could have prepared me for seeing my own ring for the first time.

When I saw that NMJ ring box in Guy’s hands and then looked down at the ring he had created, it genuinely felt like me encapsulated in a ring.

It was everything I had ever dreamed of and somehow even more. It completely took my breath away. I still catch myself staring at my hand all the time. Knowing this is my ring, the piece I’ll wear for the rest of my life and forever associate with this chapter of our story, makes me unbelievably happy.

Guy went through the NMJ Bespoke process to create your ring. Which details feel most like you?

There are so many details I love.

The 2ct elongated cushion-cut centre stone was such a beautiful choice. I adore its proportions and the way it catches the light. I genuinely can’t stop looking at it. The shape also suits my hand so beautifully.

I had always dreamed of a three-stone design because of what it represents: our past, our present and our future. After almost ten years together, that symbolism feels particularly special.

We already have so much history behind us, but there is still so much ahead of us too.

The trillion-cut side stones are another detail I absolutely love. They give the ring something a little unexpected and distinctive while still feeling timeless. Everything about the proportions and design feels so considered, and knowing Guy went through the Bespoke process to bring it all together makes it even more meaningful.

It feels perfectly mine.

Take us back to the proposal itself. What do you remember most clearly?

The proposal itself is honestly a beautiful blur.

I had absolutely no idea it was coming, which still makes me laugh because I always thought I’d somehow know. I was convinced I’d pick up on a tiny clue or sense that Guy was acting differently, but there was nothing.

Because Guy is a photographer, taking photos together is such a normal part of our lives. So when he suggested we take one overlooking the ocean, I didn’t think anything of it.

Then I turned around.

I saw his hand move towards his back pocket and watched him drop to one knee, and I think I went into complete shock. All I could say was, “No, you’re not. No, you’re not!”  because I genuinely couldn’t believe it was happening, especially in the exact spot where I had secretly dreamed he might one day propose.

And somehow, there was still another surprise waiting. Guy had organised for my best friend to fly over and join us, which made an already overwhelming moment even more special.

We then had another six days in Uluwatu to celebrate our engagement, surrounded by a place and people we love. It was absolute magic.

I’ve been on cloud nine ever since.
