NMJ Lovers | Shane & Michael

At NMJ, our journey is intertwined with the stories of love and commitment from each of our clients. Shane and Michael's story is a testament to the profound connections we honour, and hold at the heart of everything we do.

From a chance meeting that felt as though it never ended, to a heartfelt proposal in Palm Beach, their journey is filled with moments that are as treasured as the rings they designed with us.

So much of what we do at NMJ is centered around love, where did it all begin for you both?

For us, it was love at first sight, after a swipe right. Our first date lasted for a few days. There has always been a running joke that Mike moved into my apartment on the first night.

Shane, when did you realise Mike was the one you wanted to spend your life with…

Before we met, Michael was working as a nurse in rural and remote parts of Australia. After only knowing each other for four weeks Michael resigned from his role so he could move back to Sydney and be closer to me. It was at this point I realised I wanted to marry this man! He quite literally changed his life for me so we could be together.

Tell us about your proposal!

Shane’s family regularly host family holidays in Palm Beach as it holds a lot of sentiment in their hearts. Shane decided this was a perfect opportunity to pop the question. He had a beautiful picnic organised in a park overlooking the beach and after a morning stroll together he redirects us to the park and asked me to marry him.

Your wedding rings are two of our favourite bespoke creations to date. Embedding heirloom stones into each piece was a remarkable touch, tell us about your pieces and how you ended up with each design?

We had been very kindly gifted a few rings from Shane’s mother and great aunt. We decided when thinking about our wedding bands that we wanted to use the diamonds out of these pieces and create something that truely felt like us. After reaching out to NMJ we were connected with their bespoke service. Esther was amazing at helping our dream pieces come to life.

We knew we were seeking rings that were very organic in style but most importantly, we wanted rings that appeared as though they always belonged together but also had their own personality, just like us.

We feel so honoured to have played a small role in your wedding day, what were the highlights?

For us, we weren’t after a big wedding. The highlight of our day was managing to keep the guest list to only eighteen of our closest friends and family, it was an incredibly beautiful and intimate celebration of our love. We wanted it to have a garden wedding feel so we hired a stunning house located in Terrigal. It had a beautiful garden upon a hill which overlooked the ocean. The day was just perfect, filled with good wine, good food, good company and lots of love.

What does this next chapter in life hold for you both?

As with life it is hard to predict where our next chapter will take us. The only certainty is that our love and affection for one another means that together we will fully embrace whatever journey and adventures we find ourselves on.

Tough question, but tell us, what do you know about love?

Over love is perfectly summed up by a reading from our wedding, written by Louis de Bernières, Corelli’s Mandolin

"Love is a temporary madness, it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides, you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being ‘in love’, which any fool can do. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love have roots that grow towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two."
