Sapphires
A Stone of Depth, Strength & Individuality
Sapphires have long been revered for their beauty and symbolism. Known for their durability and depth of colour, they are a stone often chosen to mark meaningful moments - designed to be worn every day, and treasured for a lifetime.
While most commonly associated with rich blue hues, sapphires exist in a wide spectrum of colours, each with its own unique character.
What is a Sapphire?
Sapphires belong to the corundum family of minerals, one of the hardest naturally occurring substances on earth.
With a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, sapphires are exceptionally durable - making them a considered choice for engagement rings and heirloom pieces designed for daily wear.
Colour & Character
While blue sapphires are the most widely recognised, sapphires can be found in a diverse range of tones, including:
- Deep ocean blues
- Soft teals and parti-colours
- Golden yellows
- Blush pinks
- Earthy greens
Each sapphire is inherently unique, often displaying subtle variations in tone, saturation and light performance.
We believe this individuality is what makes sapphires so special-no two stones are ever exactly alike.
Australian Sapphires
At Natalie Marie Jewellery, we are proud to offer Australian origin sapphires, sourced primarily from Queensland’s gem fields.
These stones are known for their:
- Rich, moody colour palette
- Distinctive teal and parti tones (not necessarily what we offer online- but only bespoke)
- Natural variation and depth
Australian sapphires offer a level of traceability and transparency that is not always possible within the global gemstone market, allowing us to share a clearer understanding of their origin and journey.
Sourcing & Transparency
The global gemstone industry is complex, with many stones passing through multiple hands before reaching a jeweller.
At NMJ, we take a considered approach to sourcing:
- We work with trusted suppliers and long-term partners
- We prioritise stones where origin can be verified
- We seek to collaborate with suppliers who support
- responsible environmental practices
- fair working conditions
- community investment
Where a stone is sold with an origin claim, we ensure this is supported by documented evidence of provenance from the supplier.
Custom Cut Stones
Many of the sapphires we offer are custom cut specifically for our designs, allowing us to:
- Highlight the natural beauty of each stone
- Maximise colour and light performance
- Create pieces that feel considered and intentional
We work with specialised cutters who understand how to reveal the unique characteristics within each individual gemstone.
Natural Variation
Unlike diamonds, sapphires are not graded through a universal system.
Instead, each stone is assessed individually based on:
- Colour
- Tone and saturation
- Clarity (often including natural inclusions)
- Cut and overall presence
Inclusions and colour variation are not flaws, but rather part of the story of the stone - a reflection of its natural formation.
Durability & Everyday Wear
Sapphires are one of the most durable gemstones available, making them well suited to everyday wear.
However, like all fine jewellery, they should be worn with care:
- Avoid hard knocks or impact
- Remove during heavy activity
- Clean gently and regularly
With the right care, a sapphire piece can become a modern heirloom, passed down through generations.
Our Perspective
We are drawn to sapphires for their quiet strength and individuality.
Our sapphires are ethically sourced from Australia, celebrated for their exceptional quality, rich natural colour, and traceable origin.
Each stone carries a sense of depth - formed over time, shaped by nature, and chosen with intention.
Whether selected for its colour, origin, or meaning, a sapphire offers something deeply personal:
a piece that feels entirely your own.
