Now recently engaged, they open up about the moments that brought them together, the thoughtful journey of creating Sunny’s bespoke engagement ring, and their reflections on what love means to them today.
Let's go back to the beginning, how did you meet?
We first met when we were about 16 through friends and we didn’t start dating until years later. That gave us the chance to really get to know each other without any pressure, and looking back, that made our relationship so much stronger.
You recently got engaged, congratulations! Can you tell us a little bit about the proposal?
Thankyou. It was such a beautiful moment. We had travelled to Melbourne for a work trip and from there we went on a surprise weekend getaway to the Mornington Peninsula.
The proposal itself was so special. We stayed at Camillo House, which couldn’t have been a more perfect place for it. The house was so cozy and warm (especially in the middle of winter) and had a beautiful view of the water.

Sunny, what was your reaction when you saw your engagement ring for the first time?
I was completely in awe. It was more beautiful than I ever could have imagined and it really felt like it was made just for me.
What does marriage mean to you both?
We are not in a rush to get married, but when the time comes, we see it as being built on love, respect and support. We think it’s about growing together and having someone by your side who sees you and chooses you.
Tom, we’d love to know why you chose NMJ to help create the perfect engagement ring for Sunny. How was your experience and how did you end up with the design that you did?
NMJ has always been Sunny’s favourite. She already had a few special pieces from there, so it felt like the natural choice. Avalon is also a place that means a lot to us and has so many of family memories attached to it.
The experience with NMJ was incredible. It was personal and collaborative. I wanted the ring to reflect Sunny. I was looking for something timeless but also modern, and I think we ended up creating something really special.

When the day comes, we want it to feel intimate and meaningful. We are really looking forward to actually spending time with our loved ones. We also love food, so we can’t wait to explore all the options and pick out some dessert options…

That is definitely a tough question and we know our understanding of love will change over time. Right now, we see love as commitment, whether or not it’s tied to marriage, and consistently showing up for someone everyday.
