BEHIND THE COLLECTION

The Making Of Saira

Every detail within Saira was chosen with intention. Long before these pieces existed in gold, silver or jade, they began as ideas about womanhood — its cycles, its quiet power, its ability to hold complexity with grace.

At the heart of the collection is a repeating floral form with no beginning and no end. Each petal was first carved in wax, slowly and by hand, before being cast into metal. This labour is part of the story: a reminder that our paths aren’t linear, but formed through turns and returns, and the soft reshaping that life asks of us.

Saira explores the duality of womanhood, and the tension between movement and stillness, intuition and ambition. How did those ideas influence your design process (not just aesthetically, but emotionally)?

Over the years, I’ve witnessed so many of the women close to me, myself included, caught between ambition and a longing for stillness - an ongoing pursuit of ‘having it all’. The more conversations I had, the more an idea started to form of a product that spoke of the unity to be found in this place. Something that would remind us that we all face moments of unsteadiness, we must simply follow our own path.

The design process for this collection felt reminiscent of the kind of work I did when I was just starting out. It felt more free and personally reflective than I usually allow space for. This collection took it’s time in becoming a tangible form. The repeated floral pattern came almost by accident. I’d been researching the flower of life and was just doodling as I thought - Saira was born from there. The whole process was for me, what I intended it to bring to life for others: something meditative, slow, intimate and reflective.

I'm really proud to have created a piece than honours this essence of womanhood. While our circumstances and choices may differ from woman to woman, our perception unites us. Wherever we are on that journey, whatever our dreams may be - that deserves to be celebrated.

The repeating floral motif is central to the collection. Can you walk us through the process of carving those petals by hand, and what that cyclical form represents to you?

As it came to me, slowly revealing itself, the process was much the same for Vinny, our jeweller who developed the custom engraving. Trial and error, exploration and play. What I love about working with our jewellers so closely, is that each collection carries the story of all of us who brought it to life. From my scratchy drawings, to Vinny’s intricate carving, to our community who embrace this ideal as their own.

The cyclical form speaks to patience and learning - something we are committed to in our craft, and that speaks to this essence of discovery through womanhood. At NMJ we take pride in celebrating the slow. Our pieces speak to that through their craftsmanship and the stories they tell, of love that spans the ages, of accomplishments built over a life time, they are slow because they are intended to be.

Jade

Saira Stacking Ring

A circle with no beginning and no end, the Jade Stacking Ring is a quiet meditation on continuity.

Carved from rich green jade, each ring carries its own natural marbling - a landscape shaped over time, entirely unique. Smooth and grounding against the skin, its rounded silhouette feels both substantial and serene, a gentle reminder of the cycles we move through and the steadiness that lives within them.

Worn alone, it is a subtle statement of presence. Stacked, it becomes a rhythm - layered expressions of intention, evolving as you do. No two combinations the same, just as no two journeys unfold alike.

Jade & Cotton Cord

Saira Necklace

An expression of grounding and grace, the Saira Necklace in jade is a quiet meditation on balance.

Suspended from a rich cotton cord, the carved jade pendant rests gently against the heart - its natural marbling a reminder that no two journeys are ever the same. Each variation in the stone speaks to the beauty of movement within stillness, of growth shaped by time.

The simplicity of the hand-knotted cord brings an earthy softness to the piece, grounding the luminous green jade and sculpted gold or sterling silver detail. Together, they embody the harmony between strength and surrender - structure and flow.

This collection introduces materials like cotton cord and jade. Why these materials, and why now? What qualities (practical or symbolic) drew you to them?

Symbolically, jade is known as the stone of the heart. With powerful healing properties and undertones of harmony and balance, it was the perfect material to sit at the centre of this intuitive collection. The cotton cord speaks back to that emotional message of a longing for simplicity and stillness. Together, with gold, these materials speak to the message of Saira. One of strength, adaptability and quiet confidence.

As well as their symbolic relevance, I was also passionate in finding ways for this collection to open new access points to our brand. With the cost of gold soaring, I am always exploring opportunities for new materials or processes to close the gap, and bring us closer to you. I want the message of Saira to be accessible to as many people as possible, I hope the introduction of new materials will allow that.

How did the emotional intention of the collection shape your choices in scale, texture, colour, and accessibility?

It was important to me that the Saira Charms felt textured and organic. There is a place for shiny, polished, perfection - but this was not that expression. Saira is about the raw and the real, the organic and the true. The detailed carving marking a mediative process of step by step, day by day - a celebration of the beauty found in the moments in between, on our way to becoming.

As for the shape, there is something very antique about the elongated shape with the refined bevelled edges. It makes this the perfect layering piece to compliment your existing treasures.

Colour can be found through your selection of metals, integrating the rich hues of jade, or customising your piece with birthstones. Saira speaks to a collective experience, but champions the individuality within that community. Whether marking your loved ones, your milestones or challenges overcome through a colourful array of birthstones, or pairing your Saira Charm with one of our Sashi or Sana necklaces - the experience is brought to life through you.

I trust the calm, certain voice within me.

I walk toward the unknown with trust in what’s becoming.

I belong deeply to my own life.

Was there a particular moment in the making of Saira where the story ‘clicked’ for you - where you understood what this collection needed to say?

It was actually in the developing of our 12 Ways of Being Cards that the message of Saira really clicked with me.

Saira is a chameleon in ways, as I intended it to be, so that it can speak to the experiences of a variety of women. However, the single uniting mantra is trust. Trust in ourselves, in our inner voice and our quiet knowing - guiding us forward. This is something I truly believe is a powerful attribute all women possess and is something that when we recognise it in ourselves, will only carry us forward.

In developing a collection that serves as a gentle reminder of this, I finally realised that we can’t look at life like a series of hurdles just to get through, in fact the opposite, those twists and turns, challenges and set backs are what defines life itself. In my own search of having it all, I’d been striving for perfection and achievement, but life is not linear, it’s cyclical, just like the pattern I’d developed.

Jewellery becomes part of someone’s daily ritual. When you imagine a woman wearing Saira (choosing it in the morning or reaching for it on a significant day) what do you hope it offers her?

I hope Saira acts almost as a companion, a gentle reminder of the softness and surety that we so easily see in others, but struggle to recognise in ourselves. It defines the questions I’ve poured over with the closest women in my life, the support we give each other and the experience we are sharing. I hope that wearing Saira close to the heart, encourages that gentle self belief - courage, hope and inner knowing.
