Everything You Need to Know About Argyle Diamonds

In celebration of our exclusive December One Of A Kind collection, we’ve curated a go-to guide for one of our most revered gemstones: Argyle Diamonds. From the diamonds’ Australian origins to their uniquely rich hues and superior level of traceability, here you’ll find everything you need to know about Argyles in one place.

Before we delve in further, we would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land where these precious gems are found, the Miriwoong, Gija, Malgnin, and Woolah people. We pay our respects to their enduring connection to the region’s land, waters and culture, and to their elders past and present.

What is an Argyle Diamond?

A rare gemstone, revered for its distinctive characteristics, pink-laced or champagne to cognac colour palette and exceptional purity, Argyle Diamonds have their own unique colour chart, setting them apart from other variations of the stone. The inimitability of Argyle diamonds is attributed to their formation in a volcanic pipe known as the Argyle pipe, made of olivine lamproite. During their formation, these diamonds interact with minerals like zeolite, micas, kaolinite, and clays, resulting in their idiosyncratic characteristics.

The Argyles’ Origins

As their name suggests, Argyle Diamonds originate from the Argyle Mine in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. This iconic mine first unveiled its resources to the world in 1979, where the accidental discovery of pink diamonds amidst the red desert landscapes marked the beginning of the Argyle Diamond legacy. The mine has since ceased operations, closing its doors permanently in November 2020. The closure was due to a steady decline in diamond production and the rising costs of maintaining the mine, however the decision sparked a surge in demand for Argyle diamonds, making them even more valuable.“To me, these Argyle Diamond pieces ooze elegance and opulence. They speak their own unique language, which unifies bold styling and fine details.” - Natalie Fitch, Founder & Director of Design.

Argyle Diamonds: A Sustainable Choice

Since our inception, we have upheld a fundamental commitment to honouring the abundant natural resources of our home continent. Crafting collections by hand in Australia, using locally sourced, naturally occurring Australian materials, is central to our brand identity, and we seek out gemstones and materials that align with our environmental values.Mined in Western Australia, Argyle Diamonds adhere to stringent environmental and ethical standards – reinforcing confidence in their responsible sourcing claim. Beyond their inherent beauty and rarity, Argyle Diamonds also represent a conscious jewellery choice.

What Makes the Argyle Diamonds in this collection so special?

Our One-of-a-Kind collection features a diverse array of champagne-coloured Argyle Diamonds, spanning from C3 in colour grading (denoting a light champagne hue), to C7 (representing a darker cognac tone). Importantly, the majority of these diamonds are certified with Argyle origin, guaranteeing their authenticity and rarity.

The design approach for this collection is anchored, similarly, in the distinctive cuts of these diamonds, which serve as the primary source of inspiration. With a wide variety of unique fancy cuts and striking angles – something not often seen in Argyle Diamond pieces – the stones laid the foundation for the collection’s creative direction.

“From rings to earrings and necklaces, there are pieces in this collection that would suit a unique bride, as well as pieces which would become every day wearable treasures.”

- Natalie Fitch, Founder & Director of Design.
